Wayne GoddardHat-trick
Three and three more: Wayne Goddard scored a hat-trick and set up three other goals for the Oranges.

Oranges flying

Wayne Goddard opened the scoring on five minutes, and it was worth the wait. A lovely one-two with Ranjan kumar Nallamuthu set it up, and after the Sky Blues goalkeeper made an excellent save from his first attempt, Wayne made sure with the second. Scott Gilzean answered within a minute with an incredible solo run to make it 1–1.

Then the Oranges took over. Luke Chalmers made it 2–1 on 12 minutes, and Matthew Radmilli rose to meet a great corner with a great header for 3–1. Gilzean pulled one back at 3–2 after an Oranges mistake gave the Sky Blues an easy chance. But Wayne then led a fine counter-attack and played Jordan Clarke through to finish for 4–2. Two minutes later Wayne struck again for 5–2, after a mistake at the back gifted the Oranges a goal.

Sky Blues fight back

Chey Thompson raced down the right and picked out Samurai Gayle at the back post for a tap-in, making it 5–3. Chalmers hit back with a counter-attack down the right, catching the goalkeeper at the near post for 6–3, and Jordan Clarke added a seventh at 7–3, set up by Ranjan kumar Nallamuthu. The Oranges looked to be running away with it.

The Sky Blues never gave up. Gayle made it 7–4 on 41 minutes, and a minute later Gulzer Khan followed up after Jonti Chisholm had made a great save from the first attempt, making it 7–5.

Nerves at the death

Jordan Clarke drove through midfield to set up Wayne Goddard for an assertive finish and 8–5. Korosh Rad then made it 8–6 on 49 minutes, with Gayle assisting. Khan struck again on 52 minutes, set up by Rad, to make it 8–7, and the Oranges held on at the end. Both goalkeepers made clutch saves at pivotal moments, which is no small thing in a game with this many goals.
